Arizona and Veteran Suicide

We may not yet know what the answer is but through our work we hope to find it soon.

Statistics can help us better understand the world around us. And they can help guide us to make better decisions. Arizona tracks and reports veteran suicide information through the Arizona Violent Death Reporting System (AZ-VDRS) and we have shared some of that information with you here.

We encourage you to read the Suicides Involving Veterans report (July 2023) published by ASU's Center for Violence Prevention & Community Safety or you can visit the AZ-VDRS Dashboard using the links below.

What is the risk for our veterans?

One in five suicides in Arizona is a veteran. Generally, veterans are twice as likely to die by suicide but for 18 to 34 year olds as well as those over 75 that risk jumps to 3.7 times more likely.

How are things going for veterans?

Trends show things are getting worse in Arizona. Data from 2011 through 2022 shows the overall veteran suicide rate has increased 24% and current projections have a year over year increase of 18% for 2023.

More than numbers...

It is always important to remember that this data is more than just numbers or statistics - it's a story of a veteran's life and given their service to our nation, we owe them a promise to care.
